Richly engrossing, surprisingly relevant to modern times
Dr. Gaskell offers a rare, immersive foray into the culture, history, and feel of 19th century fly fishing. Original texts, personal commentary, insightful analysis, and beautiful photography make this astonishing book a truly memorable read. The tragic tale of Dr. H.C. Cutcliffe and his experiences in colonial India bring strongly to mind the life that the fictional Dr. John Watson might have known before he met Mr. Sherlock Holmes. As such Dr. Cutcliffe’s career as a military doctor provides a dramatic counterpoint to his contributions to the art of fishing, imbued as it is with an admirable love of nature.( Dr. John Watson, it should be recalled, was also a fly fisherman. I seem to recall that Holmes interrupted his fishing vacation in “The Boscombe Valley Mystery” in the BBC series.)Dr. Gaskell has done a wonderful task in reconstructing the vintage flies, as well as resurrecting the genius of a man whose techniques on the stream resonate quite seamlessly with modern nymphing methods. Please pardon me for this wordy review. I have never read a book containing such fascinating mix of history, literature, and fly fishing. This is a work worthy of the memory of Dr. Cutcliffe, and a special gift to us, the fly tiers who carry on this tradition.

Those who forget the past are delighted to repeat it.
The little known patterns and techniques of the upstream stiff hackled wetfly are restored to us by Dr. Paul Gaskell, in this painstaking recollection of the life of H.C Cutcliffe. I have had the pleasure of reading this book thouroghly and can very confidently say that it’s contents are as lively and useful as the day they were written. With the help of Dr. Gaskell, many curiosities of antique language and terminology are carefully unravelled and serves to add to our understanding of Cutcliffes discoveries. Additionally, we have here for the first time ever, the photographed collection of Cutcliffe flies tied by Roger Woolley and the missing flies from the collection, respectfully tied by Dr. Gaskell, to the exact specifications of Cutcliffes original recipes. If you are as enamoured as I am of the fast mountain streams and of the beautiful trout that inhabit them, then you will surely find a kindred spirit in Cutcliffe. I highly recommend this book for any angler who is serious about his streamcraft and wishes to add a deadly arrow to their fly fishing arsenal.

The lost art of wet fly fishing – updated for current times
Got an advanced signed copy last week. The author has done a great service that should appeal to trout fly fishers/fly tiers everywhere by collating materials from to 1800’s to present day about the “lost art” of upstream wet fly techniques. Paul is an expert on Japanese tenkara which has much in common with Cutcliffe’s astute observations. The fly patterns share much with Japanese style flies which is interesting since there was no cross knowledge between the UK and Japan at that time period. I recommend the book wholeheartedly to anyone that is interested in the history of fly fishing.

Dr. Paul Gaskell has produced a number of great books on fly fishing, and this one is right up there with ‘How to Fool Fish with Simple Flies’. Stiff-hackle wet flies have been shortchanged in fly fishing literature but are important where rapid flowing rivers and streams are concerned, like the west coast of Canada where I live. I appreciate the engaging and readable style in which Dr. Gaskell shares his extensive knowledge of the history of fly tying and fishing and honours the fishers and tiers of the past who have so much to teach us today.

This book is a wonderful introduction to various fishing techniques that are no longer really practised. The language of the original text is dated and it would have been nice if the fly dressings were listed with modern equivalents, but it is a fascinating read for anyone I terested in the history of fishing

Its a hard read not least because of the language used in them days but the kindle edition is like a book copied to pdf format with small writing that does not scale. Also some opinions within are outdated in this day but many are still on point and true to this day. Don’t expect anything new though.
