Carbon Monoxide Meter

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a toxic gas. OSHA emphasizes that carbon monoxide is a poisonous, colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas – making it very elusive. Although CO has no smell, it is often mixed with other gases that do have an odor (i.e. exhaust gas). When carbon monoxide is inhaled, your body replaces the oxygen in your red blood cells with carbon monoxide.

Customers say

Customers find the CO meter reliable and well-made, with accurate readings and fast response time. They appreciate its ease of use, with one noting it’s ready to use out of the box, and its portability, with one mentioning it’s suitable for professionals on the go. While customers consider it good value, they find the instructions too vague.

Simply does what it is supposed to do, report CO levels quickly and reliably.
This is the second Forensics CO meter we have purchased. The first one is used in our Sprinter van as the primary CO sensor in case something goes wrong with the diesel “parking” heater. It responds much more quickly to CO level changes compared to standard consumer-grade household detectors, and instills far more confidence in its detection and alarm capabilities than the latter. For that reason we have purchased this second unit for our house, and plan to use it for continuous monitoring just in case something goes amiss with the gas furnace (there still are 4 household CO sensors in place as backups). Definitely satisfied with this CO detector, and plan to get a third one next year as a gift for our daughter’s house.

Requires expensive calibration to be of value
This unit must be calibrated to be of value. To calibrate you can: 1) send it to the vendor – cost $75 plus one-way shipping, 2) Buy calibration gas – $140 plus $99 for a gas regulator (pressure/flow valve) for a total of $239.I suppose all such units should be calibrated, but paying $239 to calibrate a $89 item seems excessive.I guess you will have to determine if your life is worth $239.In any case, the calibration requirement should have been highlighted in the display write up.The unit does appear to be well built.

What I would have liked to know before purchasing
I wish the description would have included: a. this needs to be recalibrated every 6 months with testing equipment I don’t have, b. it will last only 2-3 years, and c. it is not intended for constant use. I did not discover these points until I opened the box and read the instructions.

    Great meter
Bought to measure CO emissions from my vent-free, propane-fired gas log set. After measuring zero, I called the mfgr to get testing method for the meter and yup, it works fine. Log set is burning clean. Will use it to test other propane heaters in my garage and hoop-house.

    Too difficult to understand
Plus the print on the directions is so small, one needs a magnifying glass to read them…and they are so difficult and unclear that, for me, product was a waste of my money and time

    Works Well
I was worried about the venting of our gas water heater and the usual CO alarms don’t actually read at low levels. This unit was reading “0” so I wasn’t sure it was working. We own 11 old cars ranging from 1956 to 1968. Out the garage, after starting a car and having the meter near the exhaust, it started reading in single then double digits and then alarmed at the low level I set. Moving away from the car, the level settled down to 20 ppm or so. So I trust the device. Not too hung up about calibration in the future. Just want to know if the levels go up without an alarm. This is meant to wear for personal protection so in that case it would be calibrated. I might get the pump to make the readings more instantaneous. Otherwise, unless the air you want to sample is blowing, you have to wait until the environment finds its way into the sensor. Instructions might be confusing for some but they’re fine IMHO.
