Latest UV-5R varient
I think this would be a good prepper radio. Pros : USB-C charging, big battery. Similar UV-5R menu, but programmed quickly with latest build of Chirp. Larger overall size, similar size and weight to the old Motorola 200 I use at work. Big easy read display. Multi-band, not just 2M and 70Cm. Extra 771 style antenna included in bundle, but stock seems fine. Also has preset NWS channels, just press “0” for 2 secs. Used it during storm Debbie. This is a ” full featured TX radio ” if you know what I mean. Cons : Menu is red text on blue, can be hard to see. The UV-5 is better, wish they kept it. Also, if you name a preset channel, it appears in small lower case text, not the giant easy to read frequency. Airband is not super clear, but it is AM. I heard flights 10 miles out on approach. It’s better on the Broadcastify app on your phone. Mixed reviews on the actual signal quality and power, but the audio speaker seems louder than the old UV-5. So, for under $ 40, I’ll take it. Good bundle value from TIDRADIO. I keep it in the car. Not a Kenwood or Yaesu, but you won’t cry if it gets stolen or breaks.

Great radio, especially for emergencies. This comes with everything you need. The battery can charge via USB C or the included charger. USB C is great for using in your vehicle. The two different antennas are nice to have and having the programmatic cable is great if you want to use CHIRP (free) to program out and name your favorite channels. Being able to listen to two channels at once is great.

Great Bang for the Buck, Solid Radio
This is a great little Ham radio for the price. My SWR/Watt meter says it’s putting out a little over 8 watts on most frequencies and the frequency is true. SWR with stock antenna ranges from 1:01 to 1:13. I have no problem reaching local repeaters that range from 4 to about 10 miles away. Simplex gets choppy beyond about 4 miles on 146.170. Havent tried other frequencies. The display is easy to read and in color, dual watch works great, FM radio works great as well. Programming with Chirp Next and baofeng cable is easily accomplished. Programming tones and settings from the radio menu is also quite easy.

This really gets out. I can clearly hear others over ten miles away. Nice display except out in bright sunlight. In bright light it is hard to read.

It’s probably a great radio, but I still haven’t figured it out. What happened to turn it on and it’s already programmed and set up to work? I mean, I’ll keep it I guess, maybe in an emergency someone else can figure it out. Also, what’s with the plug into computer and tech added? I thought the point of these was to not need tech or be locked into it (tracable I guess)?

Good value for the price
This is a great radio for the price. We have UV-5R radios at work, and I was surprised at how much larger the 5RM is. The larger battery is good for more talk time and provides enough power to leave the display turned on if you wish.The one-touch NOAA weather radio reception is good, but it does not monitor for weather alerts.Air band reception is good for hearing aircraft, but do not expect to hear ground stations unless you are close to an airport.The radio I got did not come with a charging cradle. The trend seems to be USB C charging.The 5RM displays the same block numbers as the 5R – all vertical and horizontal lines. For example, a 7 is mirror image of an upside down capital L. The numbers are quite legible on the larger screen, but I prefer the curves and diagonal lines of the UV-21.The 5RM receives FM radio and automatically switches to two-way mode when there is main channel activity or you press the talk button. Press the #z button to seek to the next station. I think most recent Baofeng radios include this feature but not sure about the FM seek feature. Do not expect audio quality to match a car radio.You can scan memory channels or VFO scan. Scan speed is much slower than a dedicated scanner.The search function (close call) has a dedicated green key. Search takes only a few seconds to find and monitor very strong signals in one these bands that you select; VHF, UHF, 200, and 350. If it finds a strong signal, it displays the frequency and squelch code and continues to monitor until you reset or cancel the search. Press the menu button, and select an empty channel to save the search. It does not search air band, although you can do a VFO scan of the air band. Some other Baofeng radios include a search function, but the green key on the front provides easier access.
