Customers say
Customers find the two-way radio to be a good starter ham radio that offers good value for money, with positive feedback about its battery life, and one customer mentions it can go a week without charging. The functionality and ease of use receive mixed reviews, with some saying it works great while others report it doesn’t work, and some find it easy to use while others find it difficult to figure out. Moreover, the APRS capability and programming ability are problematic, with customers noting it’s not Chirp compatible and extremely difficult to program.

Good radio!
Radio works well and receivestransmits on all advertised frequencies. Battery lasts more than a day with radio on and monitoring.

This is a great radio.
This has quickly become one of my go-to radios. I upgraded to the latest 6,800 mAh extended battery. This makes it a brick, but great for out in the field and can easily go a week without charging. The dual watch is seamless. The GPS grabs the sats in seconds, even indoors, and is dead accurate. Display is beautiful. TX and RX performance are better than expected. This is a great radio.

Nice HT with APRS Tx
The first item I received is defective. I tried to upgrade firmware to 2.0.9 but it always prompts ‘communication error’. I tried another new FTDI programming cable but still the same. The replacement one works well. I can enable APRS Tx and see the HT on aprs.fi. The new GUI is also better than my 5RM whose menu may not be visible under direct sun light. I am very satisfied with the replacement one. Would give it 5 star if I do not need to replace it.

Amazing value for the price for off-road riding
I have a few off-road vehicles and have a rule to never ride alone. Sometimes you can’t help but get separated by the terrain or a wrong turn. We are seldom in a place with cell coverage. These radios work perfectly to stay in touch. The higher UHF frequencies work better if there are obstructions. Honestly, the product is so feature rich I haven’t even scratched the surface of what they can do. Battery life is great and each radio has a spare battery.Sometimes I ride with large groups of 10+ vehicles. Because these radios are frequency programmable, you can use them to communicate with all the other recreational radios on the market. Open source software from the internet lets you ‘program’ channels and features.

Not as functional as it should/could be.. Tedious to program. No data sync with CHIRP
I recently purchased the UV-5RH radio and was excited by its promise of modern USB-C convenience. Imagine my delight — finally, a sleek, updated model without the finicky 2-pin cables of yesteryear! However, after considerable effort (and more time in Device Manager than I care to admit), I’ve discovered that the USB-C port is not currently recognized for programming functionality. Despite my computer’s data-capable USB ports, multiple cables, and even attempts with CHIRP software, there’s no sign of a COM port — and no mention of drivers or programming support in the documentation. And it’s not prossible to name the channels in English.(you have to read/write in Chinese). Now, I’m sure they had their reasons — perhaps a firmware update is in the works? Or maybe this is a gentle nudge to embrace character-building manual entry? Either way, I wanted to kindly bring it to everyone’s attention and suggest that clearer documentation — or better yet, full USB-C programming support — would go a long way toward satisfying their ham customers. As we say here in the South: “Why, bless your heart.”Which, in this case, translates to: We love what they are trying to do, and we’d love it even more if it actually worked.

Great radio, good power output. Amazing customer support from Tidradio Mall!!!
It seems the bad reviews are left about either not knowing how to use the radio or because Chirp sadly isn’t yet supported. I know you can not yet upload a piture file into the boot screen with the CPS software yet either. I wanted to do that like my AR-5RM has, but cannot yet do it. It just won’t work, it crashes the program. The radio is great! It might not have good APRS though. Or maybe it doesn’t work at all. That’s what I read from someone elses review. I have never used APRS so I do not know. I know GPS works. As soon as I recieve my second one I will know how it works sending GPS to each other. The radio gets about 7 to 7.5 watts on GMRS and almost 6.5 on VHF and 8watts on UHF. Works great!I’m sure in time they will improve this radio and get it working with Chirp.I had one of these radios goofing up on me and it also had a dim screen brightness even when turned up all the way it was much dimmer than supposed to be. They sent me a new one free of charge!!! Incredible customer support from Tidradio Mall!!!

full of potential. SW suite not done yet
Without APRS this would be a 2 star radio and the reality is the APRS is a battle to get working in JUN of 2025. First order had a dud in it that would not TX or RX however the second set was fine. It is very easy to program stations in using the keypad and display. That sounds like a given, but its only recently possible in a radio at any price point and this one is intuitive. Audio sound (to my ear) is great on FM RX and reasonable on AM RX. The display is hard to read in the sun, but you can see it well enough to use the radio and maybe well enough to program a channel if you are already familiar with the menus. RX in general is marginal with a squelch that is too high. Unfortunately adding a better antenna results in worse RX presumably due to the AGC and/or front end design.for 5 stars this needs:-support for a programing SW that allows CVS list imports. 640 channels means nothing if I have to type them all in.-Improved RX design or at least adjustment of squelch set points to allow use with better antennas like the UV5R has in chirp.-Path forward for APRS functionality to everyone.-overall bug work on the firmware. Too many little things are wonky like how NOAA weather alerts behave.Strong points:-Very easy to set up and use with simplex and repeaters-FM audio RX is great-Great battery life and USB-C charging-APRS sorta works now if you are willing to put in a lot of effort. That’s impressive at this price and a first for the affordable market.

Good purchase
These are really nice radios. I had difficulty in the programming area, transmit and receive offsets. I also didn’t have anyone to contact to help. By the time the company called back, I sent them back. I did later order another one along with a programming cable recommended by an experienced ham operator.
