Great new, full-size HT from Baofeng.
Great new radio design. This is a full bodied and full metal frame handi-talkie. GPS seems to work well, and even has a bullseye style location display, like Lo-Jack, to help you find your hunting buddies easily. Good power and battery life, usb type-c port as well as desktop charging stand.

Nice unit. Comparison to UV-82HP…
I own several UV-82HP’s. This new UV-28:- Is much larger. See photo. For me, this is a plus. I am not a small guy and when i’ve used the 82 in a radio harness it feels too small.- Has a better color display with more character spacesRadio Menu: a little clunky, but not too bad. I have not manually programmed anything yet…only used CHIRP.App: First, it’s not called “Baofeng”…and it’s probably not the one you find if you do a Google search. It’s called “Walkie-Talkie Tool”. It’s ok. Works a lot like CHIRP in that you need to download the memories first before you can edit, etc. I could *maybe* see using this on-the-fly if someone gives you a frequency you want to use w/o having to fire up CHIRP, but not sure how often that might be.Charging: dock isn’t aligning with battery, so that doesn’t actually work…but…you can use USB-C, which is more convenient anyway.Overall, it feels solid and generally an “improvement” (I use that word lightly because at the end of the day, it still works the same way as other radios) over the UV-82’s that I have. I have not tried it in the field yet, so no comments on battery life or performance. Ease of programming = dependent on how you do it. CHIRP is the easiest, then maybe the App, then manually.

Good radio, hefty boy
The radio is a thick heavy boy. Has GPS, good radio frequency range, good reception, programmable from the unit with simple controls. Easy learning curve for the OS. If weight is an issue look elsewhere, but I use it for the dual monitoring of emergency frequencies.

Blown PTT plug 1st time using it.
I was really looking forward to trying this new radio, I got it programmed tested it and it worked fine. I plugged in the handheld mic/speaker option and it messed up the PTT. It worked at first but after removing the handheld PTT no longer functioned. I know this is a common issue with the cheap kenwood style plug inputs baofeng uses I sure wish they would fix this on newer radios, anyway sent it back very first day.

Save your $$ and get the F-8 Pro
TL/DR skip it and get the BF-F8HP Pro insteadI use a large number of radios for an outdoor volunteer group and wanted to check out the next generation Baofeng radios. I’ve been using a BF-F8HP and was hoping for easier programing, better screen, USB charging and less selectivity issues and maybe better receive or transmit power. I get they are not great and brand China “W” definitely has better receive but it’s also 3x the price so for us this is a good “disposable” radio.I have been lead to believe that the UV series is a step up from the BF series, and this was $20 less than the BF-F8HP Pro so wanted to give it a try. My first shock was the size and weight. While the BF-F8HP is 8.4oz, and the BF-F8HP is much larger at 12.4 oz the UV-28 plus is a monster at 14oz and feels huge and clunky. Over all this radio has been a disappointment compared to the BF-F8HP Pro and the “improvements” do not seem to be worth it.On the plus side this radio sound quality and level is slightly better than the other two. The screen is fantastic and slightly brighter than the 8 Pro. In addition it has Blue Tooth, where the other two do not. But this is only for the programing app and not a head set. The app is cumbersome and I’m not sure it’s easier than the front panel, but it’s nice for field programing and sharing programing files without Chirp and a cable / computer. Clearly Chirp is the real way to go. And yes this radio works with Chirp and yes it’s unlocked. The 28 Plus is also supposed to have channel copy/clone where the other two models do not, but I suspect this is a mistake as the button does not seem to do anything. On the down side it lacks many small features and menu items that the BF-F8HP Pro has like useful side key programing. The firmware is very similar but more half baked than the Pro and when using both you can plainly see many areas where they made the BF-F8HP Pro easier to read, easier to use, more clear, and more useful features. Both the F8-Pro and UV-28 Plus have GPS, which isn’t very usable and doesn’t seem to have good sensitivity and lack the flashlight of earlier models. I actually have found the flashlight to be more useful than the GPS as just Lat/Long isn’t useful without a map to me. This radio also lacks a High Medium Low switch that the other two have, which is a shame for when using shorter range communication or wanting to save battery life. It also lacks the “double use” front panel buttons that the BF-F8HP has so many of, even the BF-F8HP Pro, which has less than it’s predecessor, has more than this. This means you have to menu dive more often than just hit a button.I have not done any good transmit/receive tests and have not been in the high intermod areas to test yet. The BF-F8HP suffers from bad birdie chirps and I hope these are better. Lining up the three radios to receive a barely able to get repeater the UV 28 PRo did seem to have slightly better receive and it was able to ping the same repeater slightly easier than the BF-F8HP Pro. Interestingly enough the BF-F8HP standard hit them the easiest though.Overall this is a nice radio, and it is the lowest cost of the three. However the monster size and half baked firmware compared to the BF-F8HP Pro means I would recommend it over the UV 28 unless Phone/Bluetooth field reporting is very important to you and size and weight is not an issue.

Great radio, great battery life.
This was a warranty replacement. Amazon offered to exchange immediately for another one and it showed up the every next day. The original radio had a problem with the push to talk button. Otherwise, the radio was solid. When the new one came in, I Chirped it with the saved load out file and was talking immediately. The UV-28 is a solid radio and it hits every repeater in my area without a problem. I am about four miles from the repeater that does nightly nets and the radio check upon check was solid. The GPS is fast and accurate. Do not hesitate to buy.
