What is Single Side Band (SSB)?
Single Sideband is a comparatively unknown, interesting, and important radio format that takes a special radio for listening and a little time to learn. It is an efficient and reliable way to get long range information when Internet, phone or satellite is not available.
You can listen to FEMA, long range aviation, ships at sea (think Coast Guard), space (possibly even spy transmissions) and other worldwide communication. Single Side Band is not available on your smartphone which makes the CC Skywave SSB 2 the ultimate off-the-grid backup communication system.
The Skywave SSB 2 has wide and accurate band coverage in a small size making it an excellent travel and emergency radio. Single Side Band is a reliable way to get long-range information after an earthquake or hurricane when normal communications are down. The SSB tuning is accurate to 10 Hertz resolution. It also covers civilian aviation VHF with 10 aviation memories that can continuously scan for activity. It also covers AM/FM and Weather with Alert.
The Skywave SSB 2 has a shortwave antenna jack which can significantly improve SW reception when used with an external antenna. It also has a micro-USB connector for using any USB charging adapter. The in-circuit battery charging has been improved for optional “AA” NiMH rechargeable batteries. We’ve listened and upgraded to a higher quality speaker along with slightly more audio amplification. Longer feet have been added on the bottom of the radio for better stability.

Great travel shortwave radio receiver
This is a very sophisticated radio in a small package. Pulls in stations from far away, or listen to local air traffic, or HAP channels. There is a learning curve, but they have good online resources.

Exelent radio absolutely love it
This is an amazing radio—100% worth the price. For a radio of this size, the sound is excellent. I don’t understand why some people say the sound isn’t good. It’s very small, perfect for camping and backpacking, and also very easy to use.

A very small. very nice radio. Although it does have a music / voice option this radio is for talk, not music quality, as you can guess from the tiny speaker.

Decent reception, tinny and quiet speaker, expensive
I have tried several radios and they either have terrible reception in my area or sound awful. I was really holding out hope for the C Crane. The reception is very good compared to any other portable I’ve tried, and I’ve tried most of the major brands. I can pull in shortwave and FM really well with the built in whip antenna. With the roll up wire antenna it is a little better.The speaker is AWFUL though. I have tested another small device with the same size speaker, and it sounded oh so much better, louder, richer. This thing sounds like a 1920s speaker or something. There is a weird audible hiss that persists that I don’t get with the other radios I’ve tested and some pop when using earbuds.I’m reading horror stories about support and massive charges to fix things that should be under warranty, so not sure if I’ll keep it.Like I said, the reception is really good for the size, but the quality just seems cheap.

The C. Crane Skywave SSB 2 is in a class by itself – a small, travel-sized portable that can tune Longwave, Mediumwave (the AM broadcast band), Shortwave (including both the broadcast and SSB bands), FM broadcasts, the VHF airband and NOAA weather stations. It runs on only 2 AA batteries (and can charge NiMH batteries internally). Ergonomics are not wonderful, no surprise for a tiny travel portable, but performance is quite good and the frequency coverage listed above is unmatched in other travel portables.
